Every human being is called to receive a gift of divine sonship, to become a child of God by grace. However, to receive this gift, we must reject sin, including homosexual behavior—that is, acts intended to arouse or stimulate a sexual response regarding a person of the same sex. The Catholic Church teaches that such acts are always violations of divine and natural law. Homosexual desires, however, are not in themselves sinful.

Gays and Lesbians in the Catholic Church Many Catholics, including gay and lesbian Catholics themselves, are confused or misinformed about the status of gay and lesbian persons in the Catholic Church. As a result, many gay and lesbian Catholics fail to participate as fully as they can in the spiritual and sacramental life of the Church, and many Catholic communities fail to welcome and embrace gay and lesbian Catholics as fully as they should.

Each year, at the beginning of June, we see rainbow flags unfurled at restaurants, retail outlets, college campuses and a host of public buildings. For many of us, the welcome is encouraging, and it signals the beginning of a journey of adventure and coming home. This journey, for me and my husband Michael, began at the Amalfi Cathedral, in Italy, during a summer trip. It was there that we both reflected on our past, having grown up as Catholics.
